For the first time in six months, the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino is open.

'I love coming over and over again,” casino visitor Lupita told us.

She was one of many who made the trip.

'I try and stay home unless I have to go out somewhere else but when the casino opened up, I said I'm going,' Nieves told us.

Gamblers from all over south Texas came out for their chance to hit the jackpot.

The casino closed its doors six months ago as the virus spread like wildfire within the community.

'We feel like it was time for us to open up safely,’ Kickapoo director of marketing Jeffery Pletcher told us.

The Kickapoo staff says they are following CDC guidelines and the governor’s orders to limit the spread, taking precautions before people even walk onto the floor.

'At the entrances we have a noninvasive thermal camera and what it does it takes the temperature of every guest walking in,” Pletcher showed us.

Gamblers are not betting on their health, they’re doing their part to protect themselves.

'I got my gloves on and I wear my mask and I stay away from people, so I don't get close to them,' Nieves said.

“They have sanitizers and the wipes, so you go get your wipes, clean your machine, clean your chair and start playing,” Lupita said.

Smoking was even put to a halt.

'Something that I love in particular is that smoking is not allowed because that requires you to remove your mask and breathe out,’ Oscar Brownlee said.

Although just two months ago Eagle Pass was one of the cities with the highest infection rates in the country, a local doctor says safety protocols like wearing a mask and hand sanitizing will keep everyone safe while helping boost the economy.

Dr. Sergio Zamora: 'Things were in absolute crisis here but now things are better I believe the economy needs to reopen again,' Dr. Sergio Zamora said.

Currently, Eagle Pass has 12 COVID-19 cases, Dr. Zamora says fortunately there are none in the ICU.
